Listing a Toner / Ink Cartridge on eBay

Step-by-step for technicians: how to add toner or ink cartridges into General Sales and then list them on eBay. Unlike laptops, toners do not go through Inventory Processing — they go straight into General Sales.

Before You Start

  • Have the cartridge in front of you — you'll read the brand, part number, and check packaging.
  • Take 2–4 photos: front of box, back with part number, any damage, original seal.
  • Log in at exp.scottrecycling.com.

Part A — Add the Toner to General Sales

Menu: General Sales → ➕ Add Items → Toner / Ink

The form opens with Category = Toner / Ink Cartridge and Condition = New/Unused pre-filled.

  • Description — HTML; specs, condition, any notable details. The template (picked later) will wrap this with a standard intro/outro.
  • Photos — upload here, not in the eBay wizard.
  • Item Specifics — click the Item Specifics tab and add eBay Name/Value pairs:
    • Color → Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Tri-Color
    • OEM/Compatible → OEM, Compatible, Remanufactured
    • Compatible Printers → comma-separated model list (e.g., LaserJet P2035, P2055dn)
    • Page Yield → if printed on the box (e.g., 2,300 pages)
    • Type → Toner Cartridge or Ink Cartridge

Save

The item moves into Pending Review state. You can list it from here.

Verify: General Sales → 📁 By Category → Toner / Ink. Your cartridge is at the top.

Part B — List It on eBay

Menu: on the toner's form, click Post to eBay (button on the item form).

A listing wizard opens with the toner pre-selected.

Step 1 — Pick template and set price

  1. Template — pick either HP Toner Cartridge or Brother Toner Cartridge (pre-seeded templates for eBay category 183067, OEM condition, GTC duration, $8 shipping). Pick the one that matches the brand — if it's a Canon or Lexmark, use the HP template as a starting point, then adjust.
  2. Listing Title — pre-filled from the template's pattern {brand} {model} Toner Cartridge - OEM {condition}. Max 80 characters for eBay (not the item's 200-char internal title). Shorten if needed.
  3. Listing Price — set the eBay price. Look up comparable listings or use Research Prices if available.
  4. Shipping Cost — default $8.00. Adjust for heavier multi-pack listings.

Step 2 — Review details

  1. Category ID — 183067 (Printers, Scanners & Supplies → Toner & Ink). Don't change unless you know the correct leaf category.
  2. Condition — New (1000) for sealed OEM cartridges. Use Used (3000) if the box has been opened but cartridge unused.
  3. Description — auto-filled from the template. Review it; edit to fit the specific cartridge.
  4. Listing Duration — GTC (Good Til Cancelled) for cartridges — they sell over time.

Step 3 — Post

Click Post to eBay. On success, the form updates with: - Listed on eBay → True - eBay Listing ID and eBay Listed Date populated - Item state moves to Listed for Sale

Common Errors

Rules of Thumb

  • One cartridge, one listing. Don't list a pack of 5 as a single listing unless they're genuinely sold as a bundle — eBay buyers search by part number.
  • Photograph the part number label. It's the buyer's main trust signal.
  • OEM sells for 2–3× the price of compatible. If it's genuine HP/Brother, say so in the title and Item Specifics. If it's a third-party refill, don't call it OEM.
  • Sealed > opened > partial. Condition drives price more than brand.
  • Grade honestly. A "New" cartridge with a dented box should be "Like New" — the return otherwise will cost more than the price bump.

Why Toners Don't Go Through Inventory Processing

Inventory Processing is built for graded, reusable computing devices (laptops, desktops, phones). It captures technician time, grading, CPU/RAM/storage data, condition photos, etc. Toners don't need any of that — they are either sealed-new or described-by-hand. Putting them through the laptop workflow is extra clicks for no extra data.

General Sales is the right home for toners, and also for vehicles, furniture, tools, PPE, and anything else that isn't a processed computer.
