Odoo Basics¶
Overview¶
Scott Recycling runs on Odoo 17 Community Edition, an open-source ERP platform. On top of Odoo's built-in modules, we have dozens of custom SR modules that extend and connect them for our recycling workflows.
This section covers the native Odoo modules we use every day. These are standard features that ship with Odoo — not custom Scott Recycling code. Each page includes:
- A brief overview of the module's purpose
- How Scott Recycling specifically uses it (and what we've customized)
- Curated learning resources (videos, documentation)
- A quick-reference table for common tasks

Native vs. Custom¶
It's important to understand the difference:
- Native Odoo modules (this section) are built-in features maintained by Odoo SA. They receive updates with each Odoo version and have extensive official documentation.
- Custom SR modules (prefixed with
sr_) are built specifically for Scott Recycling. They extend native modules with our business logic — call queues, pickup tracking, KPI dashboards, and more.
Most of our daily workflows involve both layers working together. For example, the native Contacts module stores customer records, while our custom sr_management module adds call cycle fields, queue booleans, and pickup history on top of it.
Getting Started with Odoo¶
If you're completely new to Odoo, start here:
- Log in at localhost:1818 (local) or your assigned server URL
- Navigate using the app grid (waffle icon) in the top-left corner
- Search anything with Ctrl+K — the universal search bar
- Filters and Groups — most list views support filtering, grouping, and favorites

Tips¶
Ctrl+K is your best friend
The universal search bar (Ctrl+K) lets you jump to any menu, record, or action instantly. Use it instead of clicking through menus.
Native Odoo docs are excellent
For any native feature, the Odoo 17 Documentation site has detailed guides with screenshots. The pages in this section give you the Scott Recycling context on top of that.
