Inventory (Stock)¶
Overview¶
The Inventory module (also called Stock) manages warehouse operations — receiving goods, storing them in locations, moving them between locations, and shipping them out. It supports barcode scanning, multi-warehouse setups, product variants, lot/serial number tracking, and automated reordering rules.

How We Use It at Scott Recycling¶
At Scott Recycling, the Inventory module is the backbone of our device processing pipeline. When recycling pickups arrive, items are received into the warehouse, sorted by category, graded, and tracked through processing stages. Warehouse locations represent physical areas (receiving, sorting, storage, shipping) as well as logical stages in the processing workflow. Stock moves record every time a device changes location or status.
Our custom modules extend inventory significantly. The portal inventory scanning system lets warehouse staff use mobile devices to scan items and record specs. The weighted receiving module handles bulk material intake where items are received by weight rather than individual count. The laptop inventory module adds detailed tracking fields for refurbished computers — specs, condition grade, test results, and listing status. Transfer locations and the transfer dashboard provide visibility into where inventory sits across the facility.
Product tracking at SR uses a combination of serial numbers (for individual high-value devices) and lot numbers (for bulk materials). The Serial Number Scanner report lets warehouse staff scan barcodes to look up an item's full history — which pickup it came from, what processing it's gone through, and where it currently sits. When working in Inventory, always make sure you're in the correct warehouse location before processing transfers or adjustments.

Tips¶
Always check your location
Before processing any receipt, transfer, or adjustment, verify you're working in the correct source and destination locations. Moving items to the wrong location creates inventory discrepancies that are difficult to trace later.
Use the barcode scanner app
For receiving and transfers, the barcode scanning interface is much faster than manually editing transfer records. It also reduces errors by validating scanned items against expected quantities.
Internal Transfers vs. Inventory Adjustments
Use internal transfers when moving items between locations (e.g., receiving to sorting). Use inventory adjustments when correcting counts without a physical move (e.g., fixing a miscount). Don't use adjustments as a shortcut for transfers — it breaks traceability.
